Everything you need to know about choosing a topic

November 30, 2025

You are nearing the end of your higher education, and one of the last big tests is...
writing a thesis. Choosing a good topic is very important, so let's start with that!

Consider these aspects when choosing a topic:

1. Orientation and knowledge of the requirements:

Before you start anything, find out what your college/university's requirements are, as they vary from institution to institution. Check the format and content requirements of your thesis, find out about recommended topics, and potential advisors.

2. The topic also includes a consultant:

When choosing a thesis topic, you are also choosing a consultant, and it is worth considering this carefully. Be sure to choose a consultant whose opinion and judgment you trust, with whom you believe you will be able to communicate effectively during the thesis writing process. Let him/her know your ideas, ask for his/her opinion on the topic outline and the imagined structure of the thesis, and feel free to ask him/her for help if you feel stuck while writing your thesis.

3. Novelty, uniqueness and relevance of the topic:

It is important to choose a topic that you are really interested in, as you will have to work on it continuously for a few months. Before making a decision, it is worth checking the database of theses and diploma theses that have already been evaluated, and whether there are any
there is sufficient literature and research results.

If we choose a topic that is too popular, then – although there will probably be a lot of literature – there is a risk that many people have already covered it and it will be difficult to explore the topic in a new light.

Perhaps the only thing that can be more difficult than this is choosing a topic that is too unique, as there is usually little literature on this topic, which makes writing a thesis difficult and can also be a disadvantage during the assessment.

4. Addressing:

We find the right balance when giving the title of the thesis/diploma work. The title should not be too general, because we may be accused of not fully covering the chosen topic. The title should not be too specific, because this will tie us up in a knot, because small differences and changes may occur along the way.

It's best to choose a moderately general headline and a clarifying subheading.

In summary:

When choosing a thesis topic, an important consideration is our personal interest and how much time we can devote to collecting literature, possible research, and writing. If we know that we will be short on time, it is worth choosing something simpler. If we have a lot of time and even more enthusiasm – which makes us ideal graduates – then we can choose a special topic that requires more work. The point is that we are able to prepare what we choose in accordance with both the formal and content requirements.
