Crowning your thesis: 5+1 steps to a successful oral defense

June 10, 2025

Writing your thesis is a huge achievement in itself, but the real "finale" comes after: the oral defense, where you have to present and defend your work. This is not just an exam, but an opportunity to show that you not only wrote down, but also understand what you researched.

The following 5+1 tip it helps you not only get through it, but also make the most of it - confidently, prepared and authentically.

1. Know your own work deeply – not just the text!

Remember: you don't have to "tell" the thesis, but you have to represent the thinking, research, and professional attitude behind it. Prepare:

  • A research questions with precise knowledge.
  • A methodological decisions with justification.
  • The theoretical background and clarifying key concepts.
  • The interpreting results and possible alternative approaches.

Being able to speak independently about your work suggests that you didn't just copy, but actually thought it through.

2. Create a clean, professional presentation

The oral defense begins with a presentation lasting about 10-15 minutes – this is the key to making a good first impression. A good presentation:

  • Logically structured: problem statement → objective → method → results → conclusion.
  • Spectacular, but not overcrowded: use figures, tables, keywords.
  • It complements, not replaces, what you have to say.: don't read the slides!
  • Professional looking: uniform font, colors, easily readable content.

Tip: try it on multiple devices (laptop, projector) to make sure it's clearly visible everywhere.

3. Practice live – but not by rote!

Confidence comes with practice. Practice as you would perform live:

  • Say it out loud several times, time it, pay attention to where you slow down or become uncertain.
  • Hold a mock defense for family and friends – ask for feedback!
  • Record it on video and then analyze it: posture, volume, forcefulness, too many „uh-huh”s?

With practice, you not only capture the content, but your performance also becomes more natural.

4. Prepare for questions – and don't be afraid of them!

The questions are not against you, but for you. The committee wants to see how you think, react, and understand your topic:

  • Think ahead., what questions might come up (e.g. why did you choose this method? What was the biggest challenge?).
  • Don't be afraid if you don't know something right away - an honest answer (e.g. "I haven't done any special analysis on this, but it sounds interesting, I'd be happy to read up on it") is more intelligent than a forced reasoning.
  • It is worth talking to your consultant about what you can expect from the committee.

5. Impressions matter: appearance and nonverbal communication

The presentation consists not only of your words, but also of your appearance:

  • Dress elegantly but comfortably: choose clothes that make you feel comfortable.
  • Be present: maintain eye contact, pay attention to your body language, don't be shy.
  • Speak clearly, articulately, and confidently – but not mechanically.
  • A good smile, straight posture, and calm presence often say more than any clever words.

+1: Be proud of your own path!

Last but not least: don't just prepare technically, but spiritually too.

  • Look back at how much you have improved during your research.
  • Think about it: you are probably the one who knows the most about this topic in the room!
  • This is not an "interrogation", but a recognition of your research work.

If you approach it this way, the entire defense will take on a different atmosphere – and the committee will feel it too.

Summary

The oral defense is not just an exam, it is an opportunity: an introduction, a closing, a celebration. Take advantage of it and show how much your work is worth – not only in writing, but also in real life!
