When writing a thesis, not only time but also the right tools can be decisive factors. While previously source research, data processing and writing were done entirely manually, today artificial intelligence (AI) can make it significantly easier for you too 🙂 You don't have to be an IT expert to use AI-based tools - you just need to know when, what and which app to use.
1. Quickly search and organize literature
Recommended applications:
- Connected Papers – visually maps scientific articles related to a given topic.
- Research Rabbit – functions as a research „recommendator”, recommends related studies and organizes them.
- Google Scholar – It lists AI-based results and also helps with automatic link generation.
AI can see through the network of related scholarly works and help us focus on relevant sources and filter out less useful ones. This is especially useful if you have chosen a relatively narrow or new research topic.
2. Discovering research gaps and focusing on topics
Recommended application:
- Elicit – AI searches for research answers based on questions and shows what already has an answer and where research is still lacking.
This tool makes it easier to position your own topic and avoid focusing on a problem that has already been covered many times. The AI also makes suggestions on where to expand or narrow your topic.
3. Data collection and questionnaire optimization
Recommended applications:
- Typeform – an aesthetic, easy-to-use questionnaire builder with AI-based question suggestions.
- Google Forms – a simple, fast questionnaire editor, to which you can also associate statistical AI analyses.
- Qualtrics – a more advanced research platform where AI analyzes responses, such as emotional tone or response patterns.
AI can also help with the correct formulation of questions: it suggests and corrects ambiguous questions, and filters out possible "bias".
4. Data analysis – either in statistical or textual form
Recommended applications:
- IBM SPSS + ChatGPT – if you are not a statistics expert, AI can help you understand and use SPSS commands.
- GPT-4o or Claude – they can provide assistance in the thematic analysis of qualitative data (e.g. in-depth interviews).
- KNIME or Orange – visual AI tools for machine learning analysis, easy to learn.
Artificial intelligence not only speeds up data processing, but also helps you choose the right methodology – for example, when to use correlation, regression, or clustering.
5. Copywriting, editing and proofreading
Recommended applications:
- Grammarly / DeepL Write – spelling and stylistic correction in English (and partly Hungarian).
- ChatGPT or Claude – also effective in reformulating paragraphs and improving structure.
- LanguageTool – Hungarian-language grammar checker AI.
These tools can help maintain the coherence of your paper, filter out redundancies, and even improve the reading experience.
6. Data visualization – creating understandable and beautiful graphs
Recommended applications:
- Tableau Public – you can create interactive visualizations from your data.
- Flourish – for easy-to-use, visually appealing diagrams.
- ChatGPT + Excel – you can give AI specific instructions on how to edit, color, or format a table or graph.
AI can also suggest what type of chart to use for your data – a bar chart, a pie chart, or even a histogram.
7. Source management and plagiarism checking
Recommended applications:
- Zotero / Mendeley – automatic collection and formatting of references (APA, MLA, etc.).
- Turnitin – professional plagiarism checker (it is possible that this is also used at your university).
- Quetext – fast and accurate plagiarism check also available in a free version.
With these tools, not only will your references be accurate, but you can also more easily guarantee originality.
Final thought: AI must be used wisely
Artificial intelligence can provide a lot of opportunities, but it is not a substitute for real research thinking. So feel free to use artificial intelligence like a digital assistant: ask it questions, guide it, and check its suggestions. With the right tools, writing a thesis can be not only more efficient, but also more enjoyable 🙂
